We buy our wine from a local vineria, which is located just outside Gallicano. Drive past the train station on your left going towards Barga. Carry on round and uphill and you will come to a junction. Turn sharp left and a little way along you will see a sign for the hotel MezzaLuna and Rita’s cookery school. Drive up the steep entrance to the hotel and the vineria is in the entrance to the hotel.
The owners Rita and Alex serve wine by the glass – which we always try. You can then choose wine from the vats labelled behind the counter and they will bottle it for you. They have an incredible range of wines including Prosecco. Our favourite is the white Lunae (pronounced Luni). It is averagely about 3.00 euros a bottle. You can sit and drink outside with the guests or locals and at lunchtime, we think he does a cheese and meat lunch board. They also serve coffee.
The wine is also available in five litre boxes.
Conad is located in Gallicano and sells everything you will need.
Esselunga is about a twenty minute drive from Verni on the road to Lucca. It is the largest supermarket in the area and carries a wider and more international range of goods.
Panifico Brogi is a local baker in Gallicano baking daily. We recommend the bread made with wholemeal and potato flour. Always shop in the morning to ensure a supply.
They also sell fresh focaccia and a type of salty crispbread.
There is a small greengrocer in the car park area of the post office run by the lovely Alena. Fruit, vegetables, pasta and eco-friendly soaps and cleaners available.
There is a market in Gallicano every Wednesday morning. It has fruit, vegetables and some interesting clothing items. It has a nice atmosphere.
The nearby town of Bagni Di Lucca has a lengthy high street with a range of shops and services.
